Can I Drink Coffee After Whitening My Teeth?

Short answer

Yes. Clinical research on at-home peroxide whitening has not found that drinking coffee during a whitening course reduces the result, so a strict "white diet" is not supported by the evidence. Coffee does stain teeth, though, and the same research advises care after whitening, so drinking less of it helps your result last longer.

Where the "no coffee" rule comes from

Many dentists and some manufacturers tell people to avoid coffee, tea, red wine and dark fruit while whitening. This is often called a white diet. The reasoning is that coffee is dark and acidic, and laboratory studies have suggested that freshly bleached teeth may pick up colour more easily.

That reasoning is sensible, but it was adopted before anyone tested it on people.

What happened when it was tested on people

An analysis published in the journal Operative Dentistry pooled five clinical studies covering 185 people and looked at whether coffee, tea, wine and dark fruit reduced whitening during a bleaching course. People who did not follow a white diet did not whiten significantly less than people who did.

A separate clinical trial in the same journal followed 40 people whitening with 16% carbamide peroxide. One group avoided coloured foods and drinks. The other group, all regular coffee drinkers, also rinsed with black coffee four times a day. Coffee exposure did not appear to affect the degree of whitening or the amount of tooth sensitivity. The trial was small and the groups were not randomly assigned.

What the studies do not say

These studies measured the whitening result during treatment and shortly after it. They do not show that coffee stops staining teeth. The authors of the pooled analysis state that care should be taken after bleaching, because coffee, tea, wine and dark fruit will stain bleached enamel. Regular coffee drinking after you finish whitening will bring some colour back over time, the same way it built up in the first place.

Practical habits that make sense

  • Do not drink coffee while the trays are in your mouth. Whiten first, remove the trays, and brush. With short wear trays such as Opalescence Go 15%, a session is 15 to 20 minutes, so it fits in before a morning coffee.
  • If your teeth feel sensitive after a session, very hot or very cold drinks may be uncomfortable. That is a comfort issue, not a staining issue.
  • Rinsing with water after coffee is a simple way to limit how long the pigment sits on your teeth.
  • If your dentist or the product instructions give you different directions, follow those.

Related questions

How long should I wait to drink coffee after whitening?
The research does not give a waiting time. It found no harm to the whitening result from coffee during treatment, but coffee does stain teeth afterwards, so cutting back helps the result last.

Does tea or red wine undo whitening?
The pooled analysis above included tea, wine and dark fruit and did not find significantly less whitening in people who consumed them during treatment. Like coffee, they can stain teeth afterwards.

How long does Opalescence Go 15% take to work?
It is worn 15 to 20 minutes a day for 5 to 10 days. See our full answer.
