How Often Can You Use Whitening Trays?

Short answer

During a whitening course, trays are used once a day for the number of days the product states, which for Opalescence Go is 5 to 10 days. After the course, whitening moves to occasional touch-ups. A dentist speaking for the American Dental Association has said a touch-up about once a month is probably enough.

There are two different schedules

People ask this question about two separate things, and the answers are different.

  • The course. This is the daily use that gets you to your target shade. It has a fixed length set by the manufacturer.
  • Maintenance. This is the occasional session afterwards that deals with new staining from food and drink.

During the course

Follow the product's instructions exactly. For Opalescence Go, Ultradent's directions are one session a day: 15 to 20 minutes for the 15% trays or 30 to 60 minutes for the 10% trays, for 5 to 10 days. Syringe gels used with custom trays, such as Philips Zoom NiteWhite and DayWhite, have their own wear times printed in the pack.

Wearing trays for longer than directed is not a way to speed things up, and it is a common cause of gum irritation.

After the course

Whitening does not last forever, because teeth pick up new stains. That is what touch-ups are for. In a 2008 WebMD feature on whitening overuse, Matthew Messina, DDS, a consumer advisor with the American Dental Association, said that after the initial treatment a once-a-month touch-up is probably sufficient. The same feature notes that people who smoke or drink dark liquids such as tea and coffee might need one every two weeks.

A touch-up means a single session or a short run, not a repeat of the full course.

Signs you are whitening too often

Dentists quoted in the same feature describe these signs of overuse:

  • Excessive tooth sensitivity, especially to cold.
  • Redness, irritation or bleeding in the gums.
  • Teeth that start to look translucent or blotchy.
  • Strong, throbbing tooth pain after the peroxide has been on too long.

Some sensitivity on its own does not mean you are overdoing it. If you get sensitivity, the advice in that feature is to stop, wait for it to go, then resume for less time or with a lower strength product. See your dentist if it does not settle.
