Is an Electric Toothbrush Better Than a Manual One?

Short answer

Yes. A Cochrane review of 56 trials found that after more than three months of use, electric toothbrushes reduced plaque by 21% and gum inflammation by 11% more than manual brushes. The difference was already measurable after one to three months.

How big is the difference?

The review pooled results from 51 trials with 4,624 people.

Extra reduction with an electric brush After 1 to 3 months After more than 3 months
Plaque 11% 21%
Gum inflammation (gingivitis) 6% 11%

The longer people used an electric brush, the bigger the gap became.

Does the type of electric brush matter?

Brushes with a round head that rotates back and forth, called rotation-oscillation, are the most studied type. They account for 27 of the trials, and they showed a significant reduction in plaque and gum inflammation at both time points.

Oral-B's round-head brushes, including the iO6, are of this type.

Who benefits most from an electric brush?

The American Dental Association says people who find brushing physically difficult may find a powered brush easier to use. It names older people, people with disabilities, children, and people with braces.

Is an electric toothbrush safe for your gums?

Yes. In the Cochrane review, side effects were rarely reported, and the ones that were reported were minor and temporary.

How long and how often should you brush?

Two minutes, twice a day. The American Dental Association also advises replacing the brush head every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
